What do I need to build a PST Mod?

Recommended Posts

I recently sold my Quark to help fund another purchase so my Ha viewing will be limited to my Lunt 50 Ha for the time being.

I like the idea of a large, dedicated solar scope but the cost is prohibitive so my thoughts are turning to a PST Mod, which I know a number of people here use very successfully.

My question is, what do I need to buy to build one?

What is the ideal scope to begin with? Many seem to use 4" long fl francs - would a bigger aperture be better? (I have an Evo 150 F8 that is about to become redundant!)

All advice gratefully received.

Derek. The PST mod works on a F10 basis. Your 150 F8 would make a fine PST mod with a working aperture of 120mm. In addition to your scope you will need  a  s/h  PST, an internally fitted ERF, the best being a 90mm Baader D-ERF. If the ITF of the PST has deteriorated you will also need either a Maier replacement or a Baader 35nm Ha filter. Mechanically, you will probably need a couple of suitable adaptors for connections. I've built several of these and they mke a great high resolution Ha instrument.

Derek,

Peter has outlined the basics.....

An f10 donor scope, an ERF and various adaptors - I have a write-up available on the PST Mod, drop me an email address for a copy.

Will do, Ken, thanks
