Moonlite focuser on an ES Comethunter or reflector

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Thinking about upgrading the standard focuser on my explore scientific Comethunter (152mm Mak Newt) to a Moonlite. The stock focuser is okish though my particular one was installed badly.  Even though I've now got it working properly it's hard  to avoid getting a bit of tilt when imaging and collimation registration isn't very reliable.

Has anyone tried upgrading to a Moonlite on an ES tube - either the comethunter or a reflector? Moonlite's website doesn't specifically mention compatibility of the install kit base plates with Explore Scientific scopes but I'm guessing it will ok? I'm not especially worried about having to drill new holes or expand old ones but it would be great to hear from anyone who's been there.

Thanks,

I wouldn't buy another Moonlite for imaging. I did get one thrown in with a used scope I bought but I regard it as the usual Crayford lame duck, only very pretty. The problem is obvious - the drive roller runs against a smooth anodized flat section of drawtube and simply doesn't have enough grip to hold without slipping. Baader initially addressed this with the Steeltrack, on which the roller drives a textured steel strip. But even that wasn't bombproof so they replaced the strip with one in industrial diamond. Rack and pinion is the imaging solution.
