Baader Grossfeld Binokular - Help Please!

PhotoGav

Recommended Posts

I have been tasked with selling a Baader Grossfeld Binokular from an observatory that I am involved with. It was purchased around 2002 and has never been usable with the glorious old telescope in the observatory because of insufficient back focus. I am unsure of exactly what model it is, certainly earlier than the Mark V version available these days at around £1200. However, can anyone help with an idea of a sensible asking price on the second hand market, please? It is in very good condition and the optics appear perfect. Here are a couple of pictures of the bino-viewer:

It's a "Baader Mark IV Binoviewer"

You also have a nice T2 diagonal in the pic, is it a mirror or a prism? These are expensive too!

Either post some pics of the diagonal detached or try to identify from this link to all the different Baader Zeiss diagonals...

Alan, you star, thank you for your help. I will have a better look at the diagonal next time I am in the Observatory and post some pics. It looks as though it is quite a valuable piece of kit. Hopefully adverts will be appearing here and on Astro Buy & Sell soon!

I am looking to upgrade my Revelation, so am interested...

OK, that’s great. I will hopefully be in the Observatory this Sunday evening, so will check what the diagonal is. We can then discuss a price. Thanks.

Here are some pics of the diagonal - all identifications greatly received! There is nothing on the item itself to tell me what it is and I'm not well versed in diagonals!

I'd guess it's a variation on Baader's T-2 90 degree prism diagonal with specialized input and output ports attached.

Is the glass inside just a diagonal piece of mirror ( and you can push your finger inside) or a solid piece of glass that is flush to the openings?

- if you can get your finger inside the diagonal then it’s a mirror diagonal

- if the glass fills the interior to the openings then it’s a prism diagonal

its a “T2 diagonal” which accepts many T2 accessories. Yours has a “Baader Quick changer” fitted to one side ...

( it won’t be a heavy duty version as these were only released a couple of years ago, it’s the previous version which was much cheaper ! )

https://www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/baader-t-2-quick-changer-zeiss-micro-bayonet.html

and a T2 nosepiece the other side ...

Both the nosepiece and the Quick changer can simply be unscrewed from the diagonal to reveal the two T2 threads. When purchased it would have had two screw on caps

Which model is the heavy duty one please Alan?

You need this one if your eyepiece pairs are large (Delos for example). I use the heavy duty one on my MarkV, it is far superior to the standard model. Just compare the thumb screws of the two models in pics...

Alan

Definitely do need the heavy duty one then as I have Vixen LVW pairs 8, 13 & 22 to be used. Delos similar weights I expect.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you to everyone for your help in this thread. I am happy to say that the Binoviewer has gone to a new loving home today and there are now funds in the MCBO (Marlborough College Blackett Observatory) kitty that I hope to spend on imaging equipment very soon!
