Hi all,

Novice here, 2nd attempt at imaging DSO. Aimed to capture M51 last night but think I might have been off target. I thought my polar and synscan alignment was pretty good and synscan seemed to be on target for other objects.

Can anyone tell me if I was off target or just didn't get enough data? I have tried matching the surrounding stars to other images of the area but can't seem to figure it out. I have attached the .tif output from DSS. I have played with levels and curves but can't reveal anything yet.

If it's bad news, can anyone at least identify the faint fuzzy for me?

Skywatcher 200PDS + HEQ5Pro mount

Lights 60x60sec ISO 800

10 darks, 10 bias

Here you go!  Just a little bit off.  The faint fuzzy is NGC 5422.

I got this result from http://nova.astrometry.net which took less than 20 secs to process it.

There's a free program, All Sky Plate Solver, which can achieve the same result if you don't have internet access from your imaging rig.  Takes a little bit of setting up but once done it solves very quickly and removes a lot of the frustration (been there, many, many times!)

Ahh thank you, much appreciated.Looks like they tools could come in handy.

So I was on the wrong side of Ursa Major, jeees! Learning curve indeed. At least I captured something :D

If you navigate to a nearby star you recognise eg Alkaid, and Synch on it, then the small goto move to M51 should be in your frame, if not spot on.

Centre Alkaid

Press Esc for several secs until screen flashes

Enter will Synch

Then goto M51

You could also use the Synch star to focus

Thought I'd provide a follow up on this one. Thanks to your advice above, I managed to track down M51 last night. My star alignment was poor first time around (thought I had aligned to Arcturus but it was a nearby star...don't ask haha) but with all sky plate solver I was able to figure this out early and redo my alignment!

Only managed around 30x60sec subs before the clouds rolled in but was just so glad to see the whirlpool pop up on BackyardEOS! Had a quick play at processing today. Need to study more processing tutorials but chuffed with what I managed to pull out from such little data

Well done!

All sky plate solver isn't for everyone, but when it works it's brilliant.  

You might want to check out the free version of Astro Photography Tool.  Its Pointcraft function can put you on target (it uses APT) in just a few minutes, starting from almost anywhere.

      This is from a couple of nights ago.
      It clouded in quickly, so I didn't get much data. The temp was 2C, and I'm self-isolating - so that was also a factor! I only took 5 darks before I gave up and went to bed. I'll take more when the temp is right.
      This is 140 min integration time on a new Canon EOS Ra with 17x500s exposures, and no filter (from the city).
      Processed in PI and Photoshop - I should have used more star masks but the data aren't good enough to warrant the effort I think. I also had difficulty with flats - I tried a range of exposures with a Gerd Neumann panel, but I think they were all too short. Will go longer than 0.3s next time - very hard to figure out flat exposure on DSLRs, and APT's tool doesn't work for DSLRs yet.
      I think I'm obsessed with M51 - and I know I'll be back to it again.

      First attempt at any DSO other than the brighter stuff like M42 or Andromeda.
      Learning to use the AZ-Gti /Sharpcap polar align / windows synscan app / APT platesolving ... And guiding ! all in one night ?
      all went well so had a quick 30 mins on M51 (first time I'd ever managed to actually frame it ... Plate solving is amazing)
      90 second subs gain 420 and 5 darks and synthetic flat for dust bunnies / gradients
      Wish I'd have gone longer now as tried a 5 minute sub once guiding was working which looked good .
      Very noisy but only 30 mins .

      I decided to try to maximize detail by collecting a large quantity of Luminescence data and then applying strong deconvolution to the areas of high signal to noise.  I also decided to try out Mure denoise, a Pixinsight routine that reduces camera noise.  The final result is an LRGB and represents just over 17 hours integration time. 
      I hadn't noticed before the rather strangely shaped fuzzies in the backgroud - have a look at the annotated version for IC4278 and the triangular shaped galaxy PC2292105.

      Hi All, once again it's been a great pleasure to share this passion with SGL friends so I'd like to say a small thanks to everyone by posting a link to some data we shot here this year. It's all yours to have a play with - just try not to show me up! 
      It's from the TEC140 Triplet Apo/Mesu 200/Atik 460 mono rig working at about 0.9 arcseconds per pixel, cropped to reduce file sizes and aligned to fit together in Registar. You'll find LRGB and Ha in the link, though the Ha is a bit of a token gesture at 2X40 minutes. However, I found I could use it to give a hint of the star forming regions.  There are no short subs for the central core but I found I could use the RGB layer as a substitute since the core was quite subdued in that set.
