Globular cluster symbol

Hello,

I am researching, for my blog, on globular clusters.

The first appearance, to my knowledge, of the modern day globular cluster symbol is in J. Herschel's Results of astronomical observations made during the years 1834, 5, 6, 7, 8, at the Cape of Good Hope; being the completion of a telescopic survey of the whole surface of the visible heavens, commenced in 1825 printed in 1847. 

 

Do you know of any previous work containing that symbol?

Most of the time I see globs portrayed with that symbol, although I can't give specifics.

I have also seen it portrayed as a ring with dots surrounding it, but again, can't give any specifics.

Ring OF dots or ring made of a solid line and surrounded by dots?

The fist notation is the one for open clusters. I never saw a ring surrounded by dots. It this is the case, where did you see it?
