New Moon and the Core from the Lizard, Cornwall

I managed to get down on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall and was amazed to get some  decent skies on Thursday night. It coincided with the New Moon and the first decent view of the Milky Way Core.

As always you get the story from me - Started the evening at the wonderful Earth Station at Goonhilly, love this shot of the dish with Orion and Pleiades overhead.

Next stop was the wonderful church on the beach at Gunwalloe Church Cove dating back to the 13th Century...

We then went for a walk down to the beach at Kynance Cove (not recommended with full winter kit & camera)

Nice bit of airglow, looking South...

Then we moved over to Kennack Sands - wonderful airglow in this one

The core was supposed to be visible at 5:05 but took about 20 minutes to get high enough in the sky to be seen...

A quick journey took us down the Lizard Point

Finally a selfie, nearly at the end of the all-nighter - well worth the effort...

Too true - the plan was get some sleep before the core rose, but we were too busy shooting the other stuff...

Fantastic Images - I live in a coastal area and your photos have given me a few ideas!

I like the extended time exposure effect on the sea..... creates a seal level mistiness to underpin the majesty of the heavens.

This has given me some ideas for the North East coast.

Lovely images John. You wouldn't have caught me lugging all my gear down to the beach at Kynance in the dark, but for an image like that you never know!!

Loving the Gunwalloe shots too.

It did not help that I was wearing thermal long-John’s, winter trousers, goretex over trousers, 4 x tops, ski hat and just to make it really horrible - wellies... god I hate wellies   I don’t think I will ever do it again...

How did you persuade a boat to run aground for your final photo ? Must have cost you a bit   I won't even mention the rocks !

That was a sneaky one from Cyprus wreck of the Edeo III  - response to going fishing above. There is a nice accessible wreck near Lands End, but is not easy to get with a good Milky Way
