Hello all, this may be a stupid question, but i am getting no where with guiding,my question is to get good guiding do i need to use phd2 and ascom together?

I can never get a good graph when trying to guide,i think my pa is ok.

My set up is NEQ6 Pro.

c80 ed.

50mm guide scope.

qhy5 for guiding with st4 cable.

PHD 2.

Any help, especially any one with a similar set up would be great.

Yes, ditch the ST4 cable and use Ascom pulse guiding instead....

Connect camera to PC with USB cable

Connect mount to PC with EQMOD or direct handset to PC cable whichever you use.

In Phd 2 select you mount Ascom driver from the mount drop down list, or EQMOD if that is what you use.

In the camera dropdown list select your cameras Ascom driver

And this will probably work better, and one less cable to worry about.. :)

Agree with LB to remove the ST4 cable, one less cable to deal with. Have you ever had good guiding on your setup. If not, are you offsetting the balance to compensate for slight play in the EQ6 RA & DEC axis. There are a number of YouTube videos showing you how to do this. If it is something else, explain your equipment and set up procedure in detail and we will sort your guiding out.

Hi Paul

It would help if you told us in what way your guiding is poor.

Yes pulse guiding is preferable to ST4 but you should still be able to get good guiding, many do.

Let's  analyse your problem before you change things without a reason.

What figure in arcmins do you get for your PA?

Looks to me that your PA needs to be a bit better..near on 25 arc mins rms.. . How do you polar align, you could use sharpcap,or drift align in phd..did you run the guiding assistant after calibrating?  And where in the sky did you do your calibration...are you balanced in both axis with the scope.. sorry for all the questions..
