My first attempt at imaging a comet ... C/2016 R2 (PanSTARRS)

Recommended Posts

This is my very first attempt at imaging a comet.

I managed to grab two sets of images on two consecutive evenings this week .... I am amazed just how far the comet moved in 24hrs.

On each night I took 5 x 200sec CLS subs and 3 x 100sec RGB subs.

At least I can see some evidence of the tail ... but I had to stretch my final stacked images to get there.

Any suggestions on how long my subs need to be to bring out the comet's tail better .... assuming that I get another clear sky before the comet gets too faint????

Nice capture.

I wonder does the tail showing depend on whether the comet is going past (will show) or going away (mightn't show)?

Don't know ... I am new to all of this :-)

But I do know that C/2016 R2 is moving away from the Earth and won't be this close for another 20,000 years !
