I never understood that.. Indeed, it comes with a posh (and useless) leather case, and without cheap (and useful) lens caps!  :dontknow:

I'm sure it would be perfectly fine.  The bolt case takes the place of the dust cap.  Many come with closed cell foam end bumpers (snug fit disks) that will cushion the ends and protect the glass.
