Jedi2014
Hi everybody, M 51 is interesting because it is one of the next galaxies with an active galactic core, a type II Seyfert galaxy. In its centre there is a super-massive black hole. Unfortunately it is not visible in my image :-) As a little treat I found a tiny small asteroid in the raw images, which slowly passed M 51 within the 5 hours of the luminance shots on the right. The video can be found here: https://youtu.be/wHPw9X5bkR8 This is a 60% crop of the original field: bigger, data and more information about M 51: http://www.spaceimag...laxies/m51-2018 https://www.astrobin.com/333025/E/ Regards Jens
johnrt
Excellent image, love the little video of the asteroid, do you have any way to identify it? Is this taken with the f/4 Newt in your signature?

lukebl
Very nice capture. A check on CdC and Sky Safari reveals the asteroid to be 19th Magnitude (239957) 2001 GD1, a main belt object with a very high orbital inclination.
Jedi2014
Thank you all for your kind words. And Luke thanks for finding the asteroid. The image is taken with my 10" newtonian an ecxcellent scope. regards Jens

cfpendock
Not a lot to criticise in this image. Stunning. I especially like the contrast between the vibrancy of the galaxy and the mistiness of the of the tails. Chris

Petergoodhew
Jens, that has to be one of the best captures of M51 that I've ever seen. I certainly have never seen the tidal wave and outer parts of the galaxies extend so far. A remarkable image of a beautiful target. Congratulations. Demonperformer
4 minutes ago, Jedi2014 said: I have seen some much better images of M51 Give two different people exactly the same data and they would probably come up with different results; one emphasizing one aspect, the other another. On what basis does one decide that one end result is "better"? Can anyone answer that question? I certainly can't, I just know what I like when I see it. All of which makes me very pleased that astrophotography is a hobby and not a competition.
