Living in Las Vegas in a valley that is surrounded by mountains I knew the moon would be very low to the horizon in the west, I decided to find a better location for the eclipse. I headed to the Mojave National Preserve and used the Castle Mountains as my backdrop.

In this first image taken during mid-totality, you can easily see the Beehive open star cluster to the right of the moon.

The wide-angle shots were taken with a Canon 5D Mark II and 70-200mm lens.
The closeup composite images were taken with a Canon Mark III and Explore Scientific 127mm f6.5 952mm refractor.
