I finally decided to increase my budget a bit and found a very good deal on Hawke Endurance ED 8x42's. I managed to test drive the 10x42's and was very impressed with the quality and the compactness.

After a quick look around at these, they look like a very good binocular and should meet your needs well enough. From reviews they certainly seem to have some happy owners. Hope all goes well.
