There’s something about how well the GP mount looks with certain scopes, in this case there’s a hospital color motif going on here.

Does anyone know the RAL code for Vixen green? Not that I'm decorating the 'study', or anything like that!

I might take the Super Polaris polar scope cover down to B&Q for a colour-match!

Here's my little 80M on vixen GP mount 😊

Think I'll change the D/Tail bar to black 🤔

Just noticed I never put the ext bar & weight on 🤣

Looks great Mark. Get that counterweight on sharpish before it all goes pear shaped! 😱

My Vixens......

SXW mount with OO OMC140, then VMC200L which went onto an SXD2 , before being changed for a VC200L.

Finally a Vixen AP (the Carlsberg of slowmotions but lacks capacity due to module construction) in several modes, and a Porta doing good solar. There should be an APZ in the mix but cant find snaps. BTW the AP stuff was picked up ex dem as prices are steep, a wonderful but flawed concept. The Vixen AP Start Tracker/ SW hybrid works bril as the RA motion is superb. It breaks down into small bits and fits in a Mini Lowepro with the Questar, eyepieces, tripod etc etc (inspired by the Takahashi Tegul)

Hi Callisto, nice setup. I've been thinking of getting the SXG tripod like yours for my GP2, but mine's the older 60mm base version. I see you have the 60mm to 45mm conversion adaptor on your tripod, how do you find it? Does it still offer a solid and rigid enough fixing?

Hi there, sorry for the late reply,

I got mine through Bresser uk:   https://www.bresseruk.com/Astronomy/Vixen-GP60-45AD-Tripod-Adapter-for-SXG-HAL130-Tripod.html

Yes its a very solid adapter which gives a good stable platform for my GP mount head

It is a bit pricy but worth it in my opinion, this attached to the SXG tripod gives a very stable base indeed :)

It was sent from Germany through Bresser uk but it only took 5 days to arrive.

Mark.

Might as well add these in here too. First one is my Vixen 102mm f10 PST Mod. Not classical Vixen looks as it has been modified into a smaller tube but it works very well.

The second shot is my very lovely Vixen FL102S, looks fab and is optically excellent too.

Nice photos Stu 👍.

I note you haven't mounted Florence the Fluorite alongside "Frankenvixen"..

Are you worried they might fight?🤪😂

  • 3 months later...

Had a fiddle about this afternoon with my Vixen SP mount..

I've always used it in EQ mode thus far, (same for my FS128's EM2S mount), but as a couple of my recent short sessions have been hampered a bit by incoming clouds or lack of time, I decided to alter the SP from EQ mode to AZ mode to facilitate more of a grab and go set up..also, we plan to go to the Scottish Islands later in September, and I hope to take this set up with us in the hope of some Bortle 2 skies 🙏🙏.

It's a remarkably simple process to make the switch to AZ mode, and this facility really adds to the versatility and appeal of this lovely mount..

I found this easy pictorial guide online, with acknowledgement to the original poster, Greg Nowell,  see below. The process can be reversed back to EQ mode in less than 5 minutes.

The photos show the mount loaded with my old SP102m F10 achromat, perfectly balanced and extremely smooth in operation.

Even today, these old Vixen SP/GP/GPDX mounts offer great performance, great reliability, great engineering and superb value for money as a used purchase.👍
