Comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS)

Comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) photographed on December 15th 2017. This comet increased its activity suddenly in middle November and from then has deployed a very dynamic ionic tail.

In this high resolution image taken through telescope IAC-80 from Teide Observatory can be seen multiple jets ejected from nucleus in all directions, as well as changing clouds of plasma emerging from coma and waving behind with the solar wind.

And This is a very low res image taken from 62m in the UK (not 5000m up a Volcano ) - tonight Jan 6 2018 - this image tracks the stars unlike your excellent image which tracks the Comet - Nice One I think you need an assistant :laugh2:

I observed comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) tonight using the 20" dob. I located it using sky safari 5 and was using ethos13 eyepiece (x150). The comet was pretty faint but easy to spot.

Switching to ethos8 (x250) it was a fuzzy blob. no core was directly seen. A tail appeared!

Switching to ethos10 (x200) the view remained a fuzzy blob with a tail.

Probably the ethos8 was the best view. The comet was easier to find than comet Heinze (which I observed on 28th December) probably due to it being more compact.

Comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) photographed on January 7th 2018. Still to four months of its perihelion shows a great activity in shape of a unusual ionic tail, intensely bluish because its composition of carbon monoxid, and waving in shreds at mercy of the solar wind. The bright star at down-left is Gamma Tauri, the star at the apex of the V-shaped Hyades star cluster in Taurus.

Comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) photographed on February 4th 2018 during its conjunction with the Pleiades open star cluster (Messier 45). The comet deploys a long blue tail inside our Solar System composed by carbon monoxide ionized because solar wind, whereas that blue nebulosity around star cluster are clouds of interstellar dust (visible for whole image) enlightened by brightest stars. The image is a mosaic composed by three tiles filling a field of 7 x 2 degrees.

Comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) photographed on March 6, 2018 seems less active in spite of be still to two months of perihelion, although keeps its appearance with a small coma from which departs a blue narrow ionic tail that is opening in distance.

Taken on January 9th 2018, this is the first image of comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) belonging to serial obtained from Teide Observatory during maximum activity days. In this case highlights the bluish tail as a plume composed with several filaments wich are projected to different directions.

I maked a mosaic with some images of this comet:


Evolution of the comet C/2016 R2 (PANSTARRS) along a total of ten days with images taken especifically on January days 9, 11, 14, 17 and 19 of 2018 (from left to right). This comet was characterized because its inusual and active ionic tail with a changing shape day to day, such as can be see in this composition of pictures taken with a zoom lens from Teide Observatory in Canary Islands, covering a wide field plenty of interstellar cirrus into constellation Taurus.
