Apologies... day 3 Finland aurora..

Recommended Posts

Well I say day 3, on a technicality, as its 2am here and I've just got in.. not slept yet, but I'm absolutely buzzing.. what a show I've just had... great waves of colour and movement washing in like waves on a beach.. I'm dumbfounded at what I've just seen..

I know your probably fed up by now but here's some more pictures!

Be my guest... I'll dm you the raw file if you like.. when I get home.. I've not done any real processing on them other than an auto setting on the phone (camera downloads them to jpg directly).. might bring out some more shamazingness..

Wow, that must’ve been an amazing experience. I saw them once in Alta but we only got the occasional glimpse. This display looks spectacular. Wonderful images, so difficult to pick a favourite but I love the second.

Truly awesome. I love the contrast between spiky trees and soft aurora.

What was it like visually?

Most of these are 5 second exposures at either iso3200 or 1600.. visually it's hard to describe.. it was like rolling clouds and streaks of gray with a greenish ting clouds the long tendrils we're horizon to horizon almost east to west, the  northerly we're literally like those time elapse photos of clouds dispersing over a mountain peak..

It was unbelievable.. didn't know where to look and what to point the camera at!

Really stunning captures, Fozzie! What a display! Can hardly wait for my visit to the area in the second week of Jan :).

My favourite is the third, with the ghostly aurora, the Pleiades and the view up the ski slope. Also, the 17th - with the prominent aurora arc.

Regards, Mike.

I just showed them to my mother in law, now 89, who remembers seeing them when she was 4 or 5 in Elvedon Norfolk. Her mum asked her to come outside to look, saying it would probably be the only time she’d see them in her lifetime. She still remembers the experience saying they were more horizontal with a mix of purple and green. So that would have been about 1932/3.

I hope she approved Richard, fantastic anecdotal story..

Approve :) yes of course. I’ve shown them to everyone I see. Coincidentally I was only discussing the Aurora the other evening with some mates at Christmas drinks. I’ve sent them a couple of them as well to great aclaim. You probably haven’t had the chance yet, but if you get an opportunity to look at them on a big screen it’s well worth while. I’ve just been looking at them on my 65” oled, they’re mesmerising. It’s amazing how many stars are visible in such short exposures. On the big screen the 17th & 18th look much more striking. Particularly the 17th. The green arc of light contrasts starkly against the blackness of the dark site, which also highlights the many sparking stars above. You’ll be buzzing about these for a while I think! :)

I'm humbled by that, thank you so much... although I think luck has a lot to so with.. as well as a bit of preparation and persistence to wait it our..

Guess what.... not as good but one or two nice shots on the camera to finish off.. total clouds, early flight.. think I'll head in.. on top of a ski slope as I type in -10.

Day4...
