Am i using the wrong filter

Hi' Monday night i used a CLS clip filter in my camera to capture the Flame Nebula area.I stacked the images on Deep Sky Stacker, at the end i caught the Flame Nebula, but no image of the Horse Nebula.What i like to know am i using a wrong filter to capture the Horse Nebula Thanks.Mark

Is your camera modded?

The cls ccd clip is just a light pollution filter. It doesn't really enhance nebulae. What scope/camera are you using/length/number of subs?

Hi' My camera is a Canon 500D unmodded.My scope is a 8'' F5 reflector,on the capture of the Flame Nebula area i did 37x1 mins subs, 10x 2 mins subs, same for dark frames and same amount on bias frames.Mark

Hi Mark

You probably want an Ha filter but really you need an astro-modded camera to get the benefit - and/or dark skies and lots of integration time. Also double check your fov to make sure your target is within your fov.

Just to clarify, it is possible to image with an unmodified camera

Similarly you can image nebulae without filters but they help pick out detail

Increasing the sub length will benefit a lot.. using a ha filter in a unmodded camera won't help much as the ir filter on the sensor will be blocking it to my mind..

I've read somewhere that some camera's are almost blind to ha signal, where as some let abit in..

A friend did 5 hours of data on the horsehead and I'm sure I have more data on a 3 min sub with mine..only way is mod it..

There's no substitute for a good dark sky. I personally don't like filters. Purchased two and they are in my drawer. Try a video astronomy camera.
