Is there a predicted  'Maximum',  in terms of time ?

Is it true that a meteor shower usually  peaks in count rate  at the midnight- 2am slot ??

Depends where you are in the world, sometimes the peak is in daylight here.

Gemenid peak is broad so over a few hours centred on 6.30am on 14th

Two things at work here. Firstly the peak of the shower when the Earth is passing through the densest part of the particle stream. This could be during local daylight depending on where you are.

Secondly, the local time of night. Before midnight the meteors will only be those moving fast enough to catch up with the Earth as is moves on its orbit. After midnight you are facing the direction of travel and so the relative speed between Earth and meteors is up to 70,000mph faster so more are swept up and rates increase peaking at about 2:00am.

You can't do much about cause 1 short of buying a plane ticket in advance.

Blimey - gone clear here! scattered cloud is rapidly going, but its cold and wet and snowy.

Still I managed a few minutes and saw a small one in Auriga and a big one in Cassiopeia that had that bluey-whiteness we all love :-)

Two more middle size ones in Aquila, not bad for less than ten minutes observing.

And so to bed...

Had a LONG day at work yesterday, but woke up 2.30 to go to the small room.

Stuck my head round the curtains bleary eyed and saw a real beauty streak across NE ward, really bright
