Meaning of Ha?

Recommended Posts

Taff,

The sun emits light across a spectrum of wavelengths.

Each of these wavelengths can reveal different details of the sun if we were to observe it.

Hydrogen Alpha (Ha) seems the best wavelength for the human eye to see details on the chromosphere of the sun.

Another regulary seen wavelength is Calcium-K (Ca-K), you will see some of the "purple" images in the solar imaging section. This wavelength is good for sun spots and faculae. It is not visible to the human eye if you were to try on of these filters in a solar scope for yourself (unless you have eye lens replacement that is) but its great for cameras.

What is the meaning of Ha.......

... well, all of the above AND ......  an extra expensive sub-division of this wonderful pastime...... extra time spent exposing your precious pixels to the heavens..... a sudden interest in remote and obscure clouds never before considered worth while...... being locked in a study room with a slow computer trying to get Photoshop to do something funky with 'layers'.....   and probably more.

Once you start to ask,  " So what is  OIII  ?"    you are lost to the a narrow band..... probably for 10 years minimum.

On the plus side.  The feeling of success is Heart warming to your very Soul.   You may receive a Rosette for best picture in an SGL competition.  You have then become a Wizard  at Ha.

Sean.

Ha means being able to image in astronomical twilight or moonlight, or even the all pervasive light pollution (Pick two). It also means an ever deepening hole in your bank balance. Have you seen how much 3nm Astrodons are ?
