easy binocular winter targets

Recommended Posts

Davis's Dog, a charming asterism just above the Hyades; nice in bins of any size; have a look:

Pleiades; Hyades; the three Auriga clusters M 36, 37, 38; a lot of open clusters in and around Cassiopeia; Caroline's Rose NGC 7789.

M41 in Canis maior. Try to spot the deep red Carbon star R Leporis (8.1 mag) - Hind's Crimson Star (also called the Vampire Star) -  in Lepus south of Orion.

Enjoy!

Also there is the cluster M35 in Gemini and the Beehive cluster M44 in Cancer.   You can also scan the area of Canis Major, Monoceros, Gemini, and Puppis.   The milky way is there and there are tons of open clusters there.    Also good fall targets are still visible like the Double Cluster, the Perseus Moving Group near Mirfak, open cluster M34, and also the Andromeda Galaxy.   Give M33 a try it's not hard if your skies are reasonably dark.

I second the link to Steves' Binocular Sky Newsletter, it's an excellent resource for binocular astronomy.

My favourite winter constellation is Auriga. M37, M36 & M38 all in a row are great fun to pick out with the bins. Also, love panning about Cassiopeia and then down to the Andromeda galaxy - there was a good thread on finding that on here recently.

Clear skies
