Sclereids are a form of sclerenchyma cells, the ligneous (woody), supportive tissue found in plants. Sclereids, though, have highly thickened, lignified walls, and are shaped like stars. They are the gritty bits in pears and quinces.

Okay, okay :) sorry for the confusion. Sclereids just happened to be on my mind when I saw the OP's post ... and they do look a bit like stars, and they are interesting ... :)
