AstroTortilla - No solution

I just getting my hand back in for the winter season, and I thought I should give AstroTortilla (AT) a go. So I downloaded and installed the software (making sure I followed the tutorial advice on the Lightvortex web site). However no matter what I try I cannot get it to solve using any pictures I have taken. So I am looking for advice.

Did I miss something? ..get something wrong?

Any help and advice is much appreciated

So, step 1 - make sure nova.astrometry.net can solve your image... Which indeed it can.

It was solved using index 20 .... so you need file to download smaller index files because your FOV isn't covered.

So download some more index files and set scale minimum to 2.38 and scale maximum to 2.42.

You can offline solve your image by using tools-go to image so you can set it up while not at the scope and get it all working.

Hi John78,

Yep the down sampling and the modified custom line has done the trick! Thanks very much for taking your time to help.

As I'm new to this, it seems that I have to get the parameters just right. How much would the settings you have given me apply universally? Or will I need to teak them from photograph to photograph. One reason I ask is the picture you solved for me was a unguided 9 minute exposure, which is quite a longtime ( :happy11: ). Admittedly this was at ISO 800. So for instance if I took a 60 second exposure at 800 ISO, there would be a lot less stars, so would it be more likely to solve? Would I need to tweak the parameters for this new less sensitive image?

Your camera produces huge files so I'd always leave the downsampling at 2 (only 0 or 2 work by the way) - which basically half's your image size and square roots the solve time - the sigma parameter will need adjusting up to 100 if it wont solve on shorter exposures, but its unlikely to be a problem.

The other issuette with astro-tortilla is its not focus tolerant - you have to be very near best focus before solving.
