Actually a guy in California did sell everyday garden-variety rocks in boxes. Called them 'Pet Rocks' and they came with feeding instructions. $5. He made 1 million-dollars, and used the rest to pave his driveway with.

Rube: an unintelligent country-bumpkin so-named by travelling-carnival workers who found them easy prey to separate from their money.

Thus concludes today's lesson on American colloquialisms.
