FoV Calculator Settings

Recommended Posts

Very quick question,

When using the FoV calculator, what settings do I need to put inn for my camera lenses when using my D7100?

Say for my 50mm f1.8 what goes into focal length and what into aperture.  Would assume that 50mm goes into aperture.......but what about the other one?

Apologies for being a numpty.....

f/ratio is focal length
             aperture

so aperture is focal length
                     f/ratio

50/ 1.8 = 27.77

There's every chance I'v got this completely wrong so check first :D

Sounds good to me Scott, I have noticed that some real world lenses esp zooms and wide ones dont quite obey the formula although the effective aperture calculated is correct, for example my 17-50 mm f /2.8 zoom has a lens at the front (objective) which is 67 mm.

I must admit camera lens' confuse me. we have the aperture relating to the glass front and then we have the aperture regulated by the blades. I was wondering if the light from the glass aperture is "bent" to suit the blades. Anyway, I'll shut up no coz I'm just confusing myself :D

I expect on some lenses the big bit at the front is more of a shallow corrector lens much like the glass on a Mak so isn't collecting/focusing light how we think. I would stick to the calculated value for any FOV simulations.
