10" Zerochromat - £12k starting bid!

More info at www.ahasaki.com, a new USA company recently formed by people I know. The Zerochromat, like the Jones-Bird is a sound design but needs close attention to detail to work well. The Zerochromat is lightweight due to the CF tube and the single element objective, it is, however, quite long so a substantial mount and/or installation in an observatory would be necessary. I had a look at but not through the prototype of the original 8" version. A lot of interest, and scepticism, has been shown on CN, as far as I know the only review of the 8" was by the respected instrument specialist Tom Dobbins, he gave it the "thumbs up" If the venture is successful it will add another layer to available telescope designs.  :icon_biggrin:

Interesting Peter. It certainly has always seemed a potentially good design but unproven in terms of real world reviews. I simply don't understand why it is not placed with a few well known observers in Europe and allowed to speak for itself. These ads are placed regularly at high prices with no proof of the performance of the production units.

Is it 10 feet long ? must need something more substantial than an EQ6 and two people to mount it.

Too old, too poor and too weak to even think about it

Dave

No Dave, it is only 2m.... :)

I'm not sure when 'easily mounted' and '20kg' and '2m' and 'one person' made easy bedfellows ;)

You could get a truly incredible large triplet with a great mount, and an obsy to go around the forementioned for the price of the starting bid! Everyone knows how good Apo's are for their aperture, but as Stu has mentioned these zerochromat's don't seem to get much press or reviews? or at least I haven't seen one I should say....has anyone seen a review?

That's a rather large starting bid!

I could get Moonraker to make me a bespoke apo for a lot less than that, and still have change for Jaffa cakes :icon_biggrin:

I'm looking at my 12" F/5.2 newtonian tube and trying to imagine loading something around 10 inches longer, 8 inches fatter and around 12 lbs heavier onto an EQ6, single handed

I'd certainly like to look through one that someone else has set up though :icon_biggrin:
