Assembling stage now for the leg sections..

Cut the 1200mm legs down to 1000mm, Rounded the tops, drilled and fixed the leg sections, sanded off any sharpness to the edges.. needs touching up with teak oil to the new exposed wood.

Foot section is off being routed and a few final fix items in the post..

So far its cost me around £75.. a bottle of red and two home made plum and red grape crumble , with the fruit from the garden..

Pictures... eeeeeeek!

Really coming on well now Steve, when do you think it will be finished

Im waiting on few bits through the post, for the spreader chain, and m10 threaded inserts to hold the spiked feet.. the big slow point is the routing of the foot section, its just a slow process and a favour so i cant rush the lad doing it.. the issue is finding a bit that will cut to the 36mn depth and 7-8mm.. most are around 12mm and designed for ply/chip board so the hard wood would chew them up for breakfast..

Hopefully be done for the bank holiday weekend!

Need to fashion a speader bar from the 200mm off cuts also!

  • 2 months later...

Another couple of coats of teak oil to the leg sections and into the routed slots.. darkened up nicely to match the mount leg sections..

The slot takes a m8 bolt, i use two to fix the leg sections and foot sections together.. need to do a final bit of chamfering to round of some edges, fit the rubber feet and metal spreader plates..

Ive also been offered a spreader bar and eyepiece tray very generously from Dave @F15Rules if i dont get chance this weekend, should be by next weekend..

Loving the grain runing through the feet sections..

fozzie, that is now looking really nice - It's feeding my desire for a wooden tripod more than ever.
Sadly woodwork from myself is wood butchery, so I have not the skills to make such a fine thing.

Me too, Alan!?

But I thought you had a nice wooden tripod....... or are we both wood butchers :thumbright:

Yes, I do, but I didn't make it, someone else on SGL did, and I've now had it about 5 or 6 years..it's got a Berlebach accessory tray that I found on Astroboot for a tenner!?

Thanks Alan, ive not done woodwork since I was at school really.. I've had help but more specifically the loan of the right tools is an absolute necessity otherwise id be butchering too..  in reality the wood came cut to size i need a decent chop saw, drill and bits and the encouragement to try it..

Half tempted to make a little enterprise of it, if it works and I ever find the time!

6 month waiting list... lol

Last bits done this morning... aligned the leg section with the foot.. drilled the spiked feet and fit the tread.. tapered the foot and legs... fixed the bits together...

The tripod legs are finished... bar a teak oil touch up..

Very happy with how this has turned out.. just in the process of fashioning a spreader from one gifted to me by Dave @F15Rules.. many thanks Dave..

Other than that I've clear sky's tonight so will be giving my new look GP mount a try out..

Thanks for all the interest and feed back that has enabled me to get this far and complete the project!

Just to round of after an hour or so of visual I can already tell the dampening times are down, the mounts tracking whisper quiet..and the seeing is not too shabby....

All in all very happy with this set up..

Cant see my tripod legs in the dark though... thats going to be fun..

Great set up Steve.

I had the Lyra Optic version of your scope a few years ago and it was a lovely achromat, a tad better than an excellent TAL 100 RS I felt. It's a perfect match for your Vixen and Tripod combo?.
