Solar Eclipse - Modded DSLR or Not?

Hi gang!

I'm lucky enough to be planning a trip to see the Total Solar Eclipse in the US this summer and I also have both modded and unmodded Canon DSLRs

I've previously used unmodded for these events as that is what I had at the time but this time I have a choice.

So, I'm minded to use my modded 40D but I could use my unmodded 7D (maybe I'll use both), but I'll need to concentrate on just one at key moments and so I'm looking for advice on which one. This will be attached to my FS60Q so I'm hoping for some reasonable images.

Opinions anyone?

im not sure but cant see the advantage with a modded cam for sol, but never tried one for solar. im sure someone will give you a for sure reply soon.have a great time in the states charl.

Thanks Charl, I'm thinking that any prominences will be more easily captured with the modded camera - it seems logical but just checking before committing to a plan...

I was thinking the lack of ir filter would affect the sharpness and claritiy, unless your going to put one in the train. charl.

I see, I hadn't considered that. I'll try some test shots of the solar disk to see if that had any impact. Thanks!

not a real issue, you should be OK with the modded camera.

The modded camera should pick up the proms more easily. I am still going for my unmodded, as it is much more modern, has much higher pixel count, and a much lower noise sensor than the only modded camera I have
