Autoguiding advice

Recommended Posts

I have a C9.25 and a ZWO ASI120MC-S  which works very well for lunar and planetary imaging.  Also an Orion Starshoot Colour which, despite the software actually works well.  So far on the brighter DSO objects I have had quite good results unguided but am trying to guide with an OAG using the ZWO.  Haven't done much so far, well successful once actually, but am wondering whether the mono ZWO version would be a better bet to give far more guide stars.  If so, would there be any advantage in getting the USB3 version rather than the USB2?

Cannot answer very much about the autoguiding bit, but the upgrade from USB2 to USB3 is great for planetary imaging, as you can maintain much higher frame rates (although an SSD is needed to keep up with the camera).

I have a C8, and am also contemplating autoguiding with my ASI cameras. How did you configure the kit when you were successful?

Hi Michael,

The frame rates with the USB3 are indeed much better than the 2, but I wonder if that is necessary for Autoguiding.  The Orion G3 camera is only USB2 so am thinking that 2 would be adequate to keep up - and cheaper.

As for the configuration, focal reducer, OAG plus autoguiding ZWO camera and the imaging Orion G3 camera.

Thanks for the replies.  Am thinking the ZWO ASIMM120 as the cheapest option bearing in mind that my imaging camera, the Orion G3, is not exactly top of the range!
