I'll go with "finding a dark site", nothing improves your observing (or imaging) more than a good dark place. Since finding mine, I've been getting stuff that would be quite impossible from my back garden.

Good cold weather gear. Round my way clear nights are usually very cold. Thermally lined 'hunter's' boots, thermal undies, lined trousers, down jacket, skiers balaclava... and so on. These have made the hobby vastly more pleasurable by allowing me to spend more time outside enjoying the view rather than enduring it.

A flask of tea or coffee and a red light head torch, it makes life a lot easier to have both hands free.
