?ISS just after midnight on 27th

I was heading to bed, but felt compelled to stick my head out the door for a quick look up. I noticed a second 'Jupiter' (!) so immediately this caught my attention. Reaalised it was moving, it looked like the ISS. It moved from the direction of Jupiter, across the south and slowly faded as it headed towards SE. It became extremely (intensely) bright and seemed larger and it sort of fluttered for about 5 seconds as it passed approx south. I watched it fade as it moved to the eastern horizon but it never really continued to drop, it just faded as it stayed above the horizon. There are no satellites listed on heavens above for my location 54degN 6degW. Any ideas?
