Carbon Stars listed by colour (B-V index)

Recommended Posts

Just stumbled across a CloudyNights post on Carbon stars and was pleased to find a list sorted by B – V index (the higher the number, the redder the star will

appear). When observing Carbon stars, I often was somewhat „underwhelmed“ by the look, finding more orange and salmon colours than really ruby red (the

best up to now was R Leporis). Could be a nice project for moonlit nights; here's the link to the CN article:

and taken from this, here's Dave's list :

You need good dark skies for carbon stars, they are just so cool that the brightness is not present to the human eye. Also be a little careful as not all "carbon stars" are real carbon stars. In effect the red may come from size and cool or from the presence of carbon. A lot of times people cover themselves by refering to them as Red stars. T Crb is one such, it gets included as a carbon star but is not. V Hya is often said to be the reddest. If you can have a reddest ?

I have a list for myself of about 12 to 15 that I should try and tick off one day, also a pdf of 100, not sure where that originated.
