Modifying a dual axis hand controller for faster slewing

I have this fairly common dual axis hand controller that I use with an EQ5 mount. It provides tracking and some slewing albeit slowly and only apt for minor corrections. At some.point I wished if it would be possible to.make some modification that would allow faster slewing. I guess it has to do with changing the number of pulses sent to the motors each time the buttons are pressed/read. I wonder if someone has done or know about a simple way of doing it.

I found this which is a homemade handcontrol which gives you 25x slew rate in RA and 20x in DEC. http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/archive/index.php/t-42709.html

There's an upgraded handset available which gives x16

 

But to get really fast slews you probably need something like the Astroeq mod with stepper motors.  I tried this on my EQ5 and the 800x is seriously fast.  Plus you get GoTo as well.
