Photoshop Smart Objects

Trying to get my head round Smart Objects, but not getting very far. I'm on the latest 2017 release of Photoshop CC

Can anybody tell me if this is possible with them. I would like to, for instance, create a synthetic L image by layering L and Ha as one Photoshop image, and bring that into my LRGB composition as a single "L" layer, and then go back to adjust the balance of L to Ha in the original image, whilst seeing the effect in LRGB.

Is there a way of doing this using Smart, or Linked Objects.
