Hello everyone,

After finding many bits of helpful information on this forum via Google while I was doing my research to purchase my telescope, I thought I'd finally sign up - mainly because, well, now that I've actually purchased a scope, being the complete beginner that I am, I need help :D

I'm from France originally, and I've been living in the UK for just over 10 years, currently in Surrey in a place where the light pollution is low enough to allow for some rather nice skies on clear nights. Therefore, a year ago I took the jump and got a Nexstar Evolution 8, with a few accessories. Although I've had my nose up to the stars for as long as I can remember, this is my first attempt at turning it into a proper hobby and building up some knowledge around all that. I'm a photo enthusiast, so the long run objective (pun intended) is to try my hand at astrophotography. But to start with, I just want to marvel.

Hope to have some interesting exchanges here, and I'll start by making the way to the beginners section to beg for the help I desperately need...

You will find a lot of fellow observers in Surrey.  Guildford Astronomical Scoiety has a strong membership, a connection with the Mullard Space Science Laboratory at Holmbury St Mary and arranges monthly talks at Surrey University by experts in the field.  It's a good place to meet like-minded people.

Farnham also has a society

and Walton

These societies usually have open evenings or outreach gatherings and I learned a lot from attending the Guildford meeting at Newlands Corner a few years ago.  This forum, as you have found, is full of great advice but sometimes there's nothing like talking face to face with someone with thirty years observing experience who is only too keen to encourage new observers.

I hope you enjoy many more clear skies than we have experienced in southern Surrey over the last twelve months!

Bonne chance.

Thanks a lot for the link to the Guildford society, I'll have a look at the website this weekend.

And yes, the weather has not been kind to stargazers. Last june was driving me mad, knowing Saturn was in a nice spot but hidden behind so many clouds.

Welcome to SGL. Iused to live in Frimley just along the M3 from you and was an active member of Farnham Astro Society (FAS), until I moved to Norfoilk just over a year ago in search for even darker skies, but my skies at Frimley could be surprisingly good for such a populated area. FAS members meet every 2nd Tuesday at Aldershott Cricket Club and also have access to Alice Holt Forest, south of Farnham several times a year for dark site observing, so I'd certainly recommend you contacting them.

Guildford AS is also a large active society and whilst I never attended their meetings, I know a few members there so they are also a good society to contact. I recall that they meet at the Surrey University campus somewhere and have their own domed scope over towards Dorking, though again I never visited it.

Good luck, astronomy is a great if sometimes also a frustrating hobby, but there are a lot of folks around your part of Surrey to give you practical support and advice.

Cheers, Geof
