How is it possible to software flash them and make mono without removing the colour Bayer matrix in front of the sensor....!!

hmmm, don't think it is to be honest.... :)

Glorious images charl.....  Here's a tough question...... as an upgrade to a PST.... would you recommend a Quark or dedicated   50/60mm solarscope ??

Weather not conducive to anything here in the North of Yorkshire.

hold your horses, its a softwear flash mate, if do a search on google you will find something about it, charl.

Yes I realise that, I do software flashing all the time on stuff, but all it will do is the same as taking a raw file, and leave it undebayered, it will never be a "mono" camera as such, I wasn't trying to be negative or anything, but without removing the Bayer matrix it can never be an actual mono camera...! Just take images or video in a mono mode....at a quarter of the resolution.... :):)

i just said ive read something about it mate, not that know the in and outs of it, your advice is greatfully recived, i may remove bayer matrix but im just at the thinking stage, i dont do anything without having a think first and weighing the options first, i am going to buy a dedicated mono cam its just waiting for the spare cash to do, just looking for something to use inbetween, im using a asi120mc at the mo and im getting lines whe converting to mono. clear skys, charl.  ps didnt think you was being negative, hold ya horses was just jest:happy7:

Not Charl, but maybe I can offer an opinion :icon_biggrin:. As the PST is now the default entry level Ha telescope anything else could be potentially considered an upgrade although I have had PST's that outperformed some 50/60mm models. The question posed doesn't really compare similar systems, the Quark is essentially a high power, high resolution item due to it's inbuilt 4.2X Barlow whereas a 50/60mm is better suited to visual and full disc viewing/imaging. True to say, if you already have a suitable refractor then a Quark is well worth considering. The one caveat seems to be obtaining a good working Quark, there have been many disappointing reports of problems, however results from those that do meet expectation  are outstanding.

great reply Peter, thats great imfo mate, that's the thing I fined with the quark the mag, I use mine with a 50% reducer plugged into the cam, because the seeing from shooting from indoors is not very often good enough for the high mag, it would be better if thay was built with the option to remove.  charl.

Sean,
Peter just about sums it up in his post, but I feel the need to add just a little more ....
A shorty frac will give excellent full disc views with a Quark ... my old 80mm Equinox just about managed a full disc and the 80mm Esprit achieved a full disc with room to spare. However, both of these scopes are not cheap (especially the Esprit) but you do get the benefit of having a very respectable multi purpose scope. I am sure there are other scopes that will do the job also :happy7:
FLO being a Lunt distributer is a fantastic plus, and by all accounts, are at least a galaxy apart from Daystar in terms of customer expectations ....
I cant really comment on the PST as I have only looked through them on a handful of occasions and in my opinion are a very different experience when compared to the Quark.

My apologies Charl for going off topic :happy7:

Sorry to have Hi-jacked your thread Charl.    As you say, there is so much experience out there , it is a shame not to make it accessible to others. To be fore-warned on certain matters is so helpful in this hobby, it is too expensive to make more than one mistake !!!!   ... and to learn how people have circumvented problems or issues is uplifting for the soul.

Anyway.... great pictures.  Those close ups of the double spots would make a great framed image on the wall.

am going to buy a dedicated mono cam

As I may have mentioned on another of your posts,  I can definitely vouch for the increase in quality when moving from colour to mono. Go for it when you can!

update on the cam situation. the little nextimage 5 I found in the astro bits box looks like the mono bit will works well without mod flashing, I'm getting 1280x960 res with just turning it to mono BY8 That's betterthan I'm getting full colour res with the asi120mc, but the proof is in the the pudding, ive clear forcast for tomorrow so ill try it. do I need the ir filter in it ? because I have the ERF in the wedge. charl.

Nice review and images.

I got the solar scope before my frac so I went that route. Otherwise if I had the fracs I would've gone quark.

The lunts can have their issues too so no brand is safe from rebuke. A lot of happy customers with both as well
