it doesnt give me that option on both handsets, yes they are nexsatr handsets

Are they Nexstar, or Nexstar+ handsets? The Nexstar has menu on button 3 while the Nexstar+ has Menu on button 7 and a Celestron logo on the bottom under.  We, or you, need to know as the menus may differ. To change the lat/long co-ordinates you may have to start the 2 star alignment and then abort by pressing the Back button - not at all obvious!!

All I do with my CG-5 mount is pick out the nearest city on your hand set.Select planetary align , Jupiter .This will give you a base  to get started.

On the hand set U have , eq north & eq south alignment. I think this is Y it is going the wrong way.

Version 4 manual

http://www.nexstarsite.com/download/manuals/NexStarHandControlVersion4UsersGuide.pdf

looks like you have to go into the alignment option BUT press UNDO to not accept the location. Then it should go into an amendment routine so you can change the location.

try this twice, entering your location in both of the formats suggested.

There seems to be some test alignment tips on page 11

To reset location, start a two-star align, and when you get to the time (displayed) press UNDO and edit the longitude and latitude.

Full instructions are here:

https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/227312-changing-location-on-nexstar/

I tried this on a Nexstar* handset to confirm that it works. As I said, not at all obvious and we needed to know what handset you had.

but when i type in Betelguese for example [...] the scopes seem to slew in the opposite direction

Again, can I just confirm: if your scope is pointing to the left of the meridian when you select the star in the menu and the star is to the right of the meridian, it is correct that the scope will move in the "wrong" direction. It will move the long way around the circle because the software is designed never to slew the scope across the southern meridian.

If the telescope is pointing on the opposite side of the merdian as the star (like the first diagram) then it will slew the longest way around the circle. If your scope is pointing on the same side of the merdian as the star (like the second diagram), it will slew the shortest way around the circle.

So my question: when the scope started to slew the "wrong" way, did you stop it before it finished slewing? Or did it complete its slew but was pointing in the wrong direction?

hi thanks for the diagram and i get it totally i understand what you meant from the start and to answer simply i have never stopped the slewing,it simply completed the slew to the wrong direction.

actually to be more precise following you diagram, so imagine my scopes to be pointing north this is with correct tripod set up as far as legs ar concerned, including polar alignment.

now as it stands betelguese is more at the 8-9 o'clock direction as opposed to the 7 oclock in diagram. what actually happens is yes it follows the long route from the north slew completely round to about 3 oclock in a complete slew.

i do believe it has not been correctly set but my main issue is still that i dont have a choice on entering longitude or latitude on the handset.

COSMIC GEOFF very kindly pointed me to the direction of step by step instructions, i now have the handbook which should be sufficient for both handsets since they are the same.

one handset is fine this problem is solved,it now just the other that i can not for the life of me get the choice of lat/long settings.

i do want to thank all for the help so far.

i feel this will be a reset or an update when i recieve the replacement serial/usb leads.

I don't know the scope, so please dismiss this if it is a silly or obvious suggestion, but if it's going to 3 o'clock instead of 9, have you got the mount the right way round? I.e. Pointing south instead of north?

Return the Handset to Factory setting and re enter all co-ordintates all over again. Providing all information is entered correctly you should have no further problems........Dace

Thanks to all that gave advice,

Took scopes to another member on here tried everything confirmed co ordinate were correct same thing happened.

But alas as suspected a simple update required.

All good now thanks
