Pillars of creation

Recommended Posts

With a filter and truly dark skies I think Messier 16is  fairly easy. I`ve read reports where observations With 8" or maybe 10" telescope have detected very faint fingers within the Eagle Nebula.

Not remotely Close to Hubble images, but of course.

Edit : I think I read about this in a filter comparison report somewhere..

Yeah easy in mine at Elan valley...but dark skies rule and I think I was using an astronomik UHC filter?, the middle "finger" was easy but the one to the left was quite difficult

While M16 is pretty large the pillars themselves are actually quite small - certainly I've not managed to see the pillars although I will be attempting them soon I hope with my 12".   Certainly a UHC filters brings out the best imho in M16 as a whole but perhaps quite a narrow OIII may be best get enough contrast to pull out pillars?  Dark to very dark skies certainly a requirement!
