Ally8446
Hi guys. What would be the maximum field of view one could expect from a 1.25" ep and which brand would you suggest for around £120 ? Ally
ronin
Will depend on the focal length that you want. You can get ES 82's at 14mm if I recall but not a chance at 25mm or 30mm.
Ally8446
24mm + Could push the budget to £150. Doesn't necessarily have to be a top end ep. Ally
Space Hopper
In that price range i think it would be something like the Explore Scientific 24mm giving a 68 deg FOV, pretty much as wide as you'll get with a 1.25" eyepiece . http://www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/0218620.html
Ruud
Eyepieces that have an apparent field of view and focal length that is an below the blue line in this plot can be made as 1.25" eyepieces. It has to do with the field stop. The field stop increases with the focal length, and also with the apparent field of view of the eyepiece. When the field stop becomes too large for a 1.25" barrel, a bigger barrel is needed.
Ricochet
I agree with Tubby Bear. The 24mm ES68 will max out the 1.25" barrel while the 14mm ES82 will not, you'd need an 18mm 82° eyepiece to do that. However, the 24mm ES68 in the 8" skyliner will give a field of view of 24*68/1200 = 1.36° which you may not consider much of an improvement over your 25mm Starguider which will give 25*60/1200 = 1.25°. John
The 13mm 100 degree Ethos is a 1.25" eyepiece For your budget and with a 24mm preferred focal length I think the Explore Scientific 24mm 68 would do very well and be showing pretty much as much sky as a 1.25" eyepiece can. Peter Drew
I use a couple of 20mm 84 degree apparent FOV 1.25" fit eyepieces in our 300mm binocular telescope giving a power of 50x. The image quality much beyond 50% is nothing to shout about but the immersive field and the good centre definition provide an impressive experience. Louis D
You could try to keep a lookout for a used 18mm Meade UWA or 18mm Maxvision 82. Each came in a 1.25" barrel and pretty much maxed out the 82 degree possibilities in a 1.25" format.
Dave In Vermont
Though these are from a US shop, I'm sure you can find them - under a different brand-name - over in your neck-of-the-woods. Thought you might like the information: http://www.universityoptics.com/125inch.html#UAW82 I have 80° ones. They are very good and work well in quite a few different optical-systems (telescopes).
