quick and amateur stills or video footage

IF and its a big IF I got that carried with myself tonight that I connected the Canon could I do anything if I took some video footage with it?  Say of Jupiter or M42.  Just focused it then set it to video mode and pressed the button to start.  How many minutes would I need and would I need to set up any other setting on it?  Or could I take some standard pictures with it - what camera settings please?  I don't want to get into many hours of X and Y I just want make a quick photo and perhaps see a bit more than I can with my eye.  Last time I tried some stills they were useless.
