I think the effect you describe (which I also notice) stems from the fact that the stereo image to me seems to stand out from the image plane. In that case t he brain might interpret it as smaller, because the same angular size is seen for an objects that appears nearer. It therefore should be smaller (bit like the moon overhead vs the moon near the horizon)
