A New Version of Cartes du Ciel Released

Any long-time user of CdC can tell you - updates come quite rarely. Every couple of years or so. The last version was 3.1, and was out a few years ago.

Now Version 4.0 has made it's appearence, a notice from SourceForge in my email acting to tip me off yesterday. It seems to work quite well, with some very nice upgrades here and there. If you're new to this venerable program - it's free and well respected and quite professional in it's layout - yet fully user-friendly and intuitive. A rare and very good mix indeed!

Yes ... I downloaded and installed it yesterday .... works great so far  I like the changes that I have found so far.

Initially I was a bit worried about installing it straight over the old version without any uninstalling beforehand .... but no problems at all.

I have downloaded the new version too. However I am slightly confused (not difficult!) when it comes to the bit where it says:

The following catalog change require to install the new version with 4.0 in the file name from https://sourceforge.net/projects/skychart/files/2-catalogs/

    * New version of GCVS and WDS catalog

    * New version of PGC/LEDA with 5 million galaxies

    * Add index to search planetary nebula by name

    * Add Sh2 and Barnard catalog

    * Update the pictures using better coordinates from OpenNGC

What is it talking about????? I have tried searching for the various bits i.e. GCVS etc. on the SourceForge site without success. Do I need to install them all?

Any assistance gratefully received

Hi Ian, i`ve just had a wee dram and and far from it making the instructions clearer i`m as lost as you, not sure they are needed but if you email the creation team maybe it will become understandable,hope your keeping well,

I uninstalled the earlier version I had (3.1) and did a fresh install of the new versions and the new catalogue versions as well. Seems to be working well. Comet 41P, M97 and M108 seem to be in the right place !:

I found that if I keyed the WDS catalog without having done whatever is being suggested above, all the stars in the screen developed tails - rendering the charts useless. Go figure.....

The writers are in France. Send them a query. Let's see - what town was that? Starts with an 'R'...

I think what Patrick Chevalley is saying here is;

The following catalog changes require you  install the new version (of the catlog files) from https://sourceforge.net/projects/skychart/files/2-catalogs/

If you browse the contents of this location you will find several sub directories containing the newer versions of the catalog files for various O/S and for several versions of Cdc, pick the relevent file with "4.0" in the file name..

So I installed in addition to the main package
