POOR PART EX DEALS

DAVE AMENDALL

Recommended Posts

Hi All,  I thought I would like to upgrade my Skywatcher EQ5 Synscan Mount to the  EQ6 Synscan  (£999). but the deal offered was only £125 on my gear which is in very good condition plus AZ  & Alt bolts upgrade with an extra unused Handset all current upgradable software version. Plus wait for it, I pay the carriage. I will not mention the supplier, and hope to sell  the EQ5 privately....................Dave

If it was from the quoted dealer, stay away imo, offered me £275 for a mint Meade lx200 8",yet they had a poorer model on thier site for £899 :happy9:,i would sell it private.

I second that defo keep it I thought about getting rid of my Cg5 on the 2 inch tripod but every so often I keep going back to it because it's lighter and quicker to setup and the thought of letting it go for silly money would break my heart even though I bought it cheap.

What sort of value would you put on a trade in item ? Selling privately will always command a higher price than trade-in and the dealer still needs to sell on the trade-in items at a reasonable profit to make a living.

This is the case unfortunately. You have to get as much of your investment as you can, a dealer has to get the investment back plus a profit. Not that I condone unreasonably low part-ex offers.  :icon_biggrin:

I would not really have expected a great market in P/E astro equipment. So to some extent I can half understand it.

Recall some years ago I asked about some fairly simple garden work and was given a high quote (ridiculously high) as a friend said they look upon it that they are not really interested but if you are willing (stupid enough) to pay a high price then that is your option. It was about 15 years ago but I always recall the itemised cost for removal and disposal of a lavender bush = £15.

I guess this is the reverse, they do not really want to take it but if you accept a low offer then so be it. Would you have been offended if they had simply said: Not interested!

Expect you could get most of the £125 for the handset alone. I know one used scope I bought was quite inexpensive but as it came with a working handset that alone was worth most of the cost.

What bothers me more than dealers trying to make an honest buck from time to time, are trading individuals who lurk around in the classifieds, pretend to be a regular end user, nag the sellers like mad to get the asking price down for various astro bitz, and then put the same item on their own site for a chunk more.  Obviously it is up to the seller who they decide to sell to, but I despise deception, dishonesty and underhandedness in any form, and know several forum members who have felt like they have been duped in this way.

Thankfully, this is where forums like SGL come into their own. We are able to recommend the right equipment right from the start in many cases, so that it is easier to choose a "forever" scope :)

Thanks for the comments Fellas. Keep or sell privately then is sound advice. I must confirm that it  is not FLO that offered the poor deal. A word about the NEQ6 Synscan, there is another one on Amazon at £676 Previous ads at that price were removed by request as a possible scam because of the low price.....................Dave
