Welcome from cloudy Ireland!

Hi All!

My name's Greg and I live in Ireland. I was seriously into astronomy growing up, then lost interest for many years, now rediscovering the marvels of the universe with my children. We recently bought brand new SW Heritage 130p after weeks of research (mostly here). The first light done, amazing piece of kit for the money, glad I read all these recommendations given here.

So what else can I say about myself? I'm an electronic engineer specializing in integrated circuit design, a motorcyclist and also sometimes shot photos on film in 35mm and medium format alike. I am big fan of science and universe in general, I've always been fascinated with cosmological scale of things.

So, it's nice to meet you all here and hope I can contribute something into this amazing forum.

Greg.

Hi Greg and welcome! I hope you have a lot of fun rediscovering this fantastic hobby with your kids. If we could just get rid of this cloud!

I'm also an electronic engineer and have always been interested in physics and the universe...I'm not cool enough to ride a motorbike though :tongue2:

Hi Greg,

Another electronic engineer here: I'm an RF IC designer based in Cork ... and I have to peddle to make my bike go :)

In what general region of Ireland are you based?  It's nice to share the wonders of the skies with the kids, isn't it?!

Best of luck, and hope you are getting better weather where you are to use your new scope  - constantly clouded out here of late!

Is there some weird correlation between electronic engineers and telescopes?!

By day herding invisible electrons around nanometer scale circuits working down to the picosecond realm. By night trying to see some of largest objects in the universe looking across distances and timescales of millions of light years ;)

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. Yous are such a genuinely nice bunch.

So my story of electronics and astronomy is quite simple. I am Polish and at the time I was a teenager I attended secondary school with electronics that were popular in Poland. It had A-levels curriculum but took one extra year due to additional modules in electronic engineering. My school also had a small planetarium and observatory so the astronomy was just there! But then the college was more about pure electronics and socialising so the astronomy was sidetracked, until my 4 years old son asked questions about planets and all.

To be honest once you saw the Orion Nebula there's no way back. But this time i will focus more on learning what i see than how sharp and bright it is, if you catch me drift. And Heritage was bought due to grab and go factor so we dont have to fiddle with higher quality instruments. But i guess down the road i will move to something bigger once the kids are older.

For other SGLs from Ireland I live in Naas and work in Dublin.
