Hoping to go to first astonomy society meeting here in Essex

I have discovered an astronomy society only about 6 miles from where I live.  As many of you will know/have spotted I am still a newbie that probably needs a shunt in the right direction and maybe contact with 'people that know' to ensure that I stop going 'off the rails'.  So I am pleased to have found the  East Essex Astronomy Club  http://www.eeac.co.uk/ They have a meeting on Saturday night and I am going to go along and see if I can meet some other interested folks :-D

There's also the North Essex Astronomical Society that meets at Great Notley https://northessexastro.wordpress.com/ and Castle Point Astronomy Club near Hadleigh http://www.cpac.org.uk/ Abberton reservoir also hosts a stargazing meet about once a month that is organised by NEAS.

I haven't been to any of them yet, so I can't say what they are like. I should do as EEAC in Burnham is only 11 miles from me

Well I went along last night and was made to feel very welcome, my visit coincided with their short AGM, during which I gained the impression of a small keen club looking to expand on their successful first couple of years, publicise their existence and gain more members - I got the impression that they have around 30 members at the moment.  The club appeared to be spearheaded by an enthusiastic chairman (who said he has 40 years observation experience) and treasurer and last night's talk was on the science behind the film The Martian - next month it is astrophotography.  I think it was the treasurer who has an observatory in his garden and members were invited around after the meeting - I declined, as I had a couple of errands I wanted to run, but I am looking forward to seeing it.  Before the talk we had a quick look at Venus and the moon made a brief appearance both between the clouds - we got a nice view of Venus and a passable look at the moon through thin cloud and I was delighted that everyone was complimentary about my 'beginners telescope'.  I hope I am free to go next month and they have a observation evening on the 25th March weather permitting.  At least I am now in contact with people that can probably help should I do something dire with my system at any point and need an 'expert'!
