First trial of Benro monopod with FalconEyes Pistol Grip and Helios Apollo 15x70 bins

Recommended Posts

I just had a chance to use the new monopod with pistol-grip ball head I got for my birthday as reported here:

I am very impressed with the new kit. It really improves the stability, and still gives great freedom of movement. It is also much quicker to set up than the P-mount. I had to tweak the tension screw on the ball head slightly to reach a perfect balance of being rock solid when the grip is released, but moves smoothly when the grip is depressed. The very tall monopod (191cm max) allows me to use it even at zenith.

I had a look at the moon and Venus, and the image was much more stable than free-hand. Tracking planes crossing the sky was also quite easy. All in all a very successful first light.

Cheers guys. I just had it out again, now under the stars (first time was twilight). I scanned a load of the usual suspects: M42, M45, M36-38, M81 and M82, the Double Cluster, and the moon. The images was much more stable, and the difference in set-up time between just grabbing the bins and grabbing the bins, attaching it to the monopod is negligible. Really good piece of kit.
