Asteroid 2017 BX

A close shave! A near-Earth asteroid about the size of a bus approached us at about 160,000 miles at its closest point at nearly 17,000 mph last night!

Perhaps the editor's thought it might start a panic? Or WalMart would announce an "End of the World Sale!" and start a riot?

You're right - we used to see big stories on these events. I remember several from not too long ago.

Thankfully the mainstream media must have decided it was "rock passed by the Earth, nothing much happened"

I scare myself daily when looking at this table on the Space Weather site.  As you can see, the 2nd of February had a similar encounter with 2017 BS32.

There have been 4 asteroid passes in the past month that all passed between the Earth-Moon distance. All of which were discovered only days before. Amazing really.
