canon clip in filter choices

Hi All,

I have got my head in spin regarding filters. I have 550d modded and 1100d standard dslr. I am thinking of getting a filter to improve things but am lost in which one to buy. Should I think of getting a uhc, cls, cls ccd or uv/ir one.  My skies have fairly low light pollution.

I would prefer a standard 2" one buy my t2 nose piece is missing the internal thread to connect it so maybe a clip filter instead.

I would also rather get one to suit the 550d rather than the 1100d.

cheers

Spill.

In the end I got 2" filters as they are less fiddly to change.

As for filters for light polution:

1) So long as the camera is not full spectrum modified then you only need the CLS not the CLS CCD. The CLS CCD only adds UV/IR block and if you already have that in another filter within the camera then you dont need to do it twice.

2) What targets interest you most? If you get the UHC it will have much better performance when imagin emission nebula than either CLS as it is narrower. However, if you want to image a little bit of everything than get the CLS as this is wide enough to allow you to image baud band emitters like galaxies in addition to emission nebula.

3) How bad is your light pollution exactly?

Green (Moderate)  = CLS

Yellow (Moderate to Meduim) =  CLS

Orange (Medium/High) = UHC (You need a modified DSLR to get the most from this)

Red (High As in city centre) = Realistically save up for a Mono CCD with a narrow band filter set.

From what you have said I am going to guess that you still have IR filtering in your DSLR so I would think about getting the cheaper CLS non CCD clip if your light pollution is not too bad.

If your going to be using it with your modded DSLR then I'd suggest going with the cls ccd version as it has uv/ir cut basically built into it. I used to use one and found it fantastic.

If he has a Baader replacement filter then he would be wasting his money getting the CCD version (no point in double IR filtering). Also given that both his scopes are reflectors he will be ok even if he only has the front filter still in place as that cuts IR perfectly well past 720nm and even corrected you wont get any chromatic aberration with a reflector. You literally only need the CCD version on a reflector if its a full spectrum mod as opposed to an astomod camera.

thanks all for the feedback. So busy at work I have just noticed its the 500d I have and it has the ir filter removed. I am going to be targeting a bit of everything so I may need to go for the cls ccd if I have read things correctly.

I think maybe getting a t2 adaptor with the thread for a 2" filter may be my best option as these seem to come up for sale more often.

I really think that would be your best option for it gives you more options to use any other camera, CCD or DSLR, so a lot cheaper in the end...

Okay so I have come across this bit of kit that I think I need but looking at images of filters they all seem to have internal threads so would this be okay or do I need something else?  Sorry really feeling daft having to ask but on a limited budget I do not want to get the wrong bit.

no that is something on my list for next year.  So just trying to see if I can attach a 2" filter to a t2 adapter for now. Or is this what I need?

t2 adapter

No I thin thats too long you will end up running out of back focus.

This is what you need. It has the required 2 inch filter thread.

Oh and if you are going to get a 2 inch instead of the clip defiantly do get the CCD version as you will be able to re-use it if for luminance if and when you do get a mono camera.
