Hi i have just bought a celestron nexstar 102 stl and want to take some photos of the moon and planets etc, i understand i will need a t ring and adapter for my Nikon d5100, will i need an extension tube and barlow?

Hi. Point the telescope at a distant object. Now, take the eyepiece from the telescope and the lens from the camera. Rack the focus tube out as far as possible and hold your camera up against it. Can you see the object? Is it in focus? If you need to rack in, you're OK. If you need air between the end of the focus tube and the camera you'll need an extension. 

Get an extension anyway as they're cheap and they allow you to keep more of the focuser inside the telescope causing less wobble. HTH.
