Ally8446
Just wondering what the realistic limiting magnitude of my 12" dob is as I'm about to sit down with Stellarium and write out a viewing plan for SGLXII. Can anyone help ? Ally
Mark at Beaufort
Ally I live just a few miles from Lucksall and have similar skies. Although I have a 12" scope now most of my signature were objects that I saw in a 10" scope so you have enough light gathering with your 12". If you want something a bit different than the popular DSOs have a look at the Helix Neb or NGC 253 and NGC 288 in Sculptor. I don't know your experience but a few low Messier objects like M30 or maybe try M77 if you have not seen it before.
mdstuart
Although you can go deeper I would suggest going for a limiting magnitude of 14. That should give you loads of objects to go for. See if you can see the dust lane in ngc 891, that's always easier at a dark site. Mark
