I do have some binoculars, an old heavy pair of (IIRC) 8x40 Mirandas and a pair of compact 10x25 Praktica. So neither are ideal or even very good, but it may be one step up from naked eye.

In what way are they no good?

My favoured pair of binoculars are my 8x40's, offering a wide field of view  which allows me to take in larger swathes of the sky. If their clean and mounted for better stability, they could be all you need to look at the skies at night. Remember, Stars are just points of light, so no matter how powerfull your binoculars are, they will remain just points of light!

Welcome to the SGL.
