actually, that's be easy - its a circle where the radius is the distance between the head o nth tripod and the top of the mount 

which is less than the length of the legs....

LOL!!!!!!

LOL, just practical experience (and common sense really). I've made a few tripods in the past :) (and they don't fall over...)

One would think that one of the larger manufacturers would provide mounts that had a large enough spread wouldn't you.

Then, I think I mentioned earlier, I noted that the new mount is advertised as having a wider spread than the 'DX.

 

BTW my partner loves wood - cellusose based :)

So would  love a wooden one...
